When the doctor numbs your mouth for dental procedures, they will use any number of Lidocaine type chemicals. Each one has different properties, duration of activity and strength. Depending on the procedure, they may have a certain go-to Lidocaine they like. A new study compared two of the most commonly used numbing chemicals: 2% Mepivicaine and 4% Articaine. In this double blind study, researchers found the 2% Mepivicaine out performed 4% Articaine in all areas studied. The areas compared included:
1. Reductions in blood flow
2. The area anesthetized
3. Pressure sensation
4. Temperature sensation
5. Proprioception sensation
6. Numbing effectiveness over 30, 40, 50 and 60 minutes.
The researchers concluded that 2% Mepivicaine provided superior results in all of the parameters tested over 4% Articaine, providing better anesthetic properties in terms of tissue area, tissue depth and length
